Welcome to the March edition of the ATS NSW Newsletter
On 23 February, the ATS and the Innovation Pathways Program hosted more than 80 business representatives at the first monthly seminar for 2010.
 
The seminar was conducted in conjunction with ATS Patron, Spruson & Ferguson, and focused on Intellectual Property Strategies for Entrepreneurs. The event has generated some extremely positive feedback and the presentations are now available online.
 
Following the success of this first seminar, ATS NSW is pleased to announce the second of our series to be held on the 23rd of March on the topic: High Growth Potential – the Key to Investment and Harvest and to be presented by Dr. Tom McKaskill.
 
Dr. McKaskill is an established authority on how successful entrepreneurs start, develop and harvest their ventures and is acknowledged as the world's leading expert on exit strategies for high growth enterprises.

Innovation Pathways Program
– NOW TAKING APPLICATIONS –
 
If you’re looking to commercialise an innovative technology that is supported by IP, you should consider applying for the Innovation Pathways Program – which is now open for applications!
 
The Innovation Pathways Program has been developed by Industry and Investment NSW and the Australian Technology Showcase (NSW) to assist innovative technology organisations (including researchers, start-ups and established SMEs) to accelerate the commercialisation of their technology. Subject to satisfying eligibility requirements, an assistance grant of up to $25,000 (or up to $35,000 for ATS members) may be available to individual organisations.

NBN to Crack the Local Code?
A recent article in BRW featuring the Australian-based software development company and ATS alumni, Atlassian has highlighted the current difficulties faced by software companies in cracking the Australian market which tends to shy away from domestically developed software. The article also offers an insight into the potential solution to this problem promised by the introduction of the National Broadband Network (NBN).

Important News on the NBN and the Implications for SMEs
ATS has been excited by the very recent news (published by The Australian) that Industry and Innovation Minister Kim Carr is set to appoint a new IT Supplier Advocate in the near future. The initiative is aimed at increasing market access for local IT SMEs by providing an advocate to protest against cases where a contract requires an unreasonable level of professional indemnity insurance from SMEs. The advocate may also be able to assist in cases where tenders require a level of capability within a bidding company that is well beyond what the contract is for.

iOmniscient Takes Out the Competition in the ‘Global Security Challenge for Crowded Scenes’
ATS alumni – iOmniscient - have been announced as the winners of the 2009 Global Security Challenge for Crowded Scenes. This competition is run by the London-based Global Security Challenge.

MYstaff Sales Gaining Global Momentum
As the move to cloud services gathers pace, an ATS company, MYstaff Pty Ltd, is gathering sales momentum on the global stage, with successful entry into the Japanese and American markets.

Android wears Fancy Pants
ATS member and provider of the award-winning FancyPants® user interface technology for consumer electronics, Fluffy Spider Technologies,(FST) recently unveiled their improvement to Fancy Pants – the newly developed Fancy Pants 3.0. This new version of the company's multimedia applications framework augments the rich graphics and multimedia UI capabilities of FancyPants by de-coupling user interfaces from the applications that use them. Through scriptable, autonomous user interface coding, FancyPants 3.0 lets OEMs, developers, integrators and other ecosystem participants customise the overall appearance of the end-user experience.
 
In early February, Fluffy Spider was also pleased to announce support for the Google Android™ platform in Fancy Pants 3.0.

The Realities of Medtech Innovation
 ATS NSW is pleased to support AusMedtech NSW in presenting a seminar on ‘The Realities of Medtech Innovation’. The event, to be held on the 25 March will consist of a number of presentations made by respected industry professionals in the areas of commercialisation, intellectual property and innovation and entrepreneurship.

AIIA Financial Services Forum: Innovation in Financial Services
Fact: 98% of Australia's Financial Service Industry research and development expenditure is on ICT (Information Communication Technology), totalling over $2bn per annum. Total spent on ICT in Financial Services is over $5bn. (ABS data)

The AIIA, in partnership with the Australian Technology Showcase and Industry and Investment NSW, invites you to a luncheon to discuss how technology is being used to change the nature of the Financial Services Industry;
